ITINERARI - REPUBBLICA di San MARINO

Population: 35.000 l Area: 56,20 km l Tourist Location

According to tradition, the Republic of San Marino was founded in 301 A.D. and is now about 1700 years old. The Republic is small, its territory is partly hilly and generally poor. So too have its people always been small in number and poor. San Marino is organised with its own norms and unusual institutions that regulate and supervise the democratic functioning of all aspects of city life and international concerns. In these trying times of great changes and uncertainties, what is more unusual than a small country that has been able to remain viable, healthy and free against the domination of the strong and violations of rights? From the heights of its towers or from the main square that gives life to its City Hall, charmed by the loftiness of Montefeltro and by the green of the beautiful Adriatic, you can perceive in these 1700 years of history a community that feels strong within its borders and its small population. storia di una comunità che si sente forte nei suoi brevi confini e nella sua poca gente. You feel strengthened by a message that can show the way to those who need certainties and trust in a difficult moment: strength and power are not necessarily supreme; war is never inevitable; peace is always possible; the harmony among the few or the many is founded on good laws and respect for them.
From the walls of San Marino, from the government buildings, from the rhythmical step of military parades, from the ancient ceremonies that are renewed with the same ritual and the same seriousness, from the crossbow men and from the flag wavers who still use their instruments as in ancient times, this message is constant, all it takes is to know how to listen. There are surely many valid reasons for visiting San Marino, millions of visitors pass through every year; the Republic has thus become not only of the smallest states in the world, the most ancient Republic in Europe, but also the State that, in proportion to its population, hosts the largest number of visitors.
Millions of visitors pass through every year because their friends have been here and they were enthusiastic; because it is full of an incredible number of amusing shops where you can find almost everything at a good price; because its narrow roads and high towers are so characteristic; because the panorama from this natural balcony on Italy is breathtaking; because the crossing of a border that is discreetly seen and only for tourists without passports and without the “halt” of customs officers – it is the realisation of a trip abroad that is present in every one of us.
For Italians not wanting to deal with exchange rates and foreign languages, San Marino is comfortable and calm, a foreign country in their own home; it is certainly unique because of the vision of old buildings that have opened wide their ancient doors to host souvenirs from around the world and to confuse the kitsch of the latest fashions with ancient sobriety, a great need to receive others and a traditional feeling of cordial hospitality. These are some of the reasons for visiting San Marino. They are the obvious, best-known reasons that friends speak about, that are illustrated in magazines.
And the others? They are less evident and in a certain sense secret; it is necessary to discover them; they are the patrimony of thoughts and reflections.
